the Heard houses Native Cultures and Art in Phoenix, Arizona that opened to enlighten the public about the history and heritage that includes the living cultures and arts of the Native peoples, but more so on the people of the southwest. It is called a living museum because it showcases both the relics and contemporary art of the Native cultures and has been made a Phoenix Point of Pride. It began in 1929 when Dwight B. and Maie Bartlett Heard needed a place to preserve their personal art collection, with a majority of their outstanding archaeological items in their collection coming from the La Ciudad Indian ruin that the Heards had bought in 1926 in Phoenix. Although it would begin as a small museum located in a small southwestern town, the museum has continued to grow in size and stature so much so that it is now recognized as an international institution of outstanding collections, festivals and excellent educational programs. Their collection today contains more than 40,000 items that include their library and archives with more than 34,000 volumes. It occupies more than 130,000 square feet that houses classrooms, galleries and performance space. A few of the exciting exhibits include; Home: Native People in the Southwest, an exhibit on the 19th century boarding school experiences of Native Americans, the Mareen Allen Nichols collection with 260 items of contemporary jewelry and the Barry Goldwater collection of 437 historic Hopi kachina dolls. This museum now welcomes over a quarter of a million visitors each year.
