Sitting on the banks of the Rio Grande River is the city
of
El Paso, Texas, site of historical relics dating by thousands of years
and over 400 years to the arrival of Spanish explorers.
El Paso del Norte, Cuidad Juarez today was settled before the El Paso
area because of the Apaches that kept them from crossing the river and
starting any kind of encampment there. The city has gone through some
strange experiences, at first part of Mexico in the early days, then New
Mexico and finally in 1850. It was finally incorporated in 1873 and has
slowly grown because of the military base at Fort Bliss and Biggs Army
Airfield. When the railroads came to the town in the 1880s, it became a
very wild western town with dance halls, saloons, gambling houses and
prostitution houses. In 1881, the famous 4 dead in 5 seconds gunfight
occurred with Marshall Dallas Stoudenmire killing 2 of the men with his
matching .44 caliber Colts. Again in 1910, the Mexican Revolution spread
over into El Paso at times with residents being shot from across the
border in Juarez. This revolution sent many Mexicans across the river to
the town of El Paso to escape the terrible bloodshed that was occurring
in Juarez. General John J. Pershing was in charge of the troops at Fort
Bliss. During the roaring 20s the town continued to grow and in 1930,
Conrad Hilton built his first high-rise hotel in El Paso, which today is
the Plaza Hotel and full of history. The Plaza Theater opened the same
year and the Sun Bowl established in 1936; becoming the second oldest
bowl game in the country.
Sitting at the crossroads of three states, Texas, New
Mexico and Chihuahua, El Paso is the only city in Texas to be on
mountain time and it covers 250 square miles. The biggest urban park
sits in entirety in the city which is Franklin Mountains State Park and
it covers 24,000 acres. The city is encompassed by the Chihuahuan
Desert, and the Franklin Mountains coming into the center of El Paso,
with the North Franklin Peak at 7192 feet above sea level. These
mountains represent the southernmost part of the Great Rocky Mountain
range. This mountain area is full of red clay and one of the local
mountains called Thunderbird has a rather mysterious legend surrounding
it. Looking like a giant bird guarding the desert and its treasures, one
side of the mountains blooms each spring with incredibly beautiful
yellow poppy flowers. There are many stories associated with this
mountain, as well as some marvelous ruins nearby, adding to the strange
mystic of this area.

Many
well known businesses make their home in El Paso, one large one being
the Helen of Troy Limited, maker of OXO, Sunbeam, Dr. Scholls, Vidal
Sassoon and others. Western Refining is here, as well as over 70 other
companies including; Delphi, Hoover, Boeing and Eureka to name a few.
Some of the clothing companies have left to find cheaper labor; among
these Levi's and Farrah, with Wrangler still in El Paso. In the 80s, the
city was the jean capital of the world pumping out 2 million pairs of
jeans each week. It was a great producer of copper, but that has gone
down and now the main products are; pecans, clothing, fruit, food
production, livestock, vegetables, construction materials, medical and
electronic equipment. Between the University of Texas, El Paso, and the
other schools in the area over 20,000 people are employed by the
educational system. Fort Bliss contributes a massive amount of money and
people into the city, with 12,000 troops presently stationed there. The
feds have a lot of investment in the area, since it is a border town and
a point where goods are shipped back and forth between the U.S. and
Mexico. With DEA, INS and the customs people working there, almost
65,000 is added to the populations of the city. It is also considered to
be a huge tourist area since it is so close to Mexico.
Another surprise about this city is the
location within its limits of the Tigua Indians of Yselta del Sur
Pueblo, who have lived in this very place since 1680. Home to many great
museums, the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, El Paso
Holocaust Museum and Study Center, Museum of Archaeology, Gene
Roddenberry Planetarium, Museum of History, War Eagles Air Museum, Fort
Bliss Museums and Study Center, National Border Patrol Museum, Insights
El Paso Science Museum and Magoffin Home State Historic Site. There are
many more exciting places to visit in El Paso, the Zoo, Chamizai
National Memorial, Union Depot, McKelligon Canyon, Ysleta Mission, Fort
Bliss, Plaza Hotel and theater, Cathedral Church of Saint Patrick and
much more. In the area around the city, Big Bend National Park, White
Sands National Monument, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, San Elizario
Chapel, Hueco Tanks State Park, Socorro Mission, Lincoln National
Forest, Maar volcanic craters; Kilbourne and Hunt's Holes and the
Mescalero Apache Nation. All of this awesome fantastic stuff in one
area, plus all the natural habitats make this a great place to visit or
live. Come soon. |
