Things to do in Allentown

Allentown Art Museum Allentown Art Museum Allentown, Pennsylvania
The Allentown Art Museum in Allentown, Pennsylvania began in 1934 by a group that had been organized by the well known state impressionist painter, Walter Emerson Baum, with an outstanding collection of more than 13,000 artworks. It has grown into a prominent regional art facility with an excellent library and archives of over 16,000 titles and 40 current periodicals. The museum would open in 1934 at the city's Hunsicker School with 70 paintings showcasing the works of local state impressionists and get some major attention from the regional and local art communities. In the depression years, Baum would continue to enlarge and improve the collections with the help of the Public Works of Art Project, as well as gifts and acquisitions. The city would donate a permanent home for the museum in a Federal style house located in the Rose Garden area of Cedar Park in the city in 1936, and local artist John E. Berninger would become its first curator; with John and his wife living on the second floor of the structure. The museum would get a boost in 1959 when it would receive a gift of 53 renaissance and baroque paintings and sculptures from Samuel H. Kress, that would stimulate visionaries and friends to buy and remodel another building that had been the home of the First Presbyterian Church which had been constructed in 1902. An Edgar Tafel designed addition would be added to the building, in 1975, so that the museum's programs and collecting plans would be enhanced. During the year, the museum would add a room designed by Frank Lloyd Wright that would increase its permanent collection spaces; which would be a library from the second Francis Little House, while another room from that house would be donated to the Met Museum of Art in New York City. The current collection contains a majority of European paintings, with a big collection of textiles and works on paper that were donated during the 1970s, and in 1978, the museum would acquire the Gilbert Stuart portrait of Ann Penn Allen, the granddaughter of William Allen, the founder of the city, and set a standard for the qualitive elements of their collections. Some of the more significant works includes those of the following artists and their locations; in European art are the Game Stall at Market created by the studio of Frans Snyders in the mid 17th century; Saint Jerom Penitent by Lorenzo Lotto painted in 1515; Portrait of Henrica Ploost van Amstel by Paulus Moreelse from 1625 and the Central panel on an Altarpiece, Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine by Giovanni del Biondo from 1379. American works come from Ann Penn Allen by Gilbert Stuart from 1795, Floriform Vase from Tiffany Studios in 1905 and Niagara Falls by Gustav Johann Grunewald created in 1834. Textiles include a bed curtain from Palampore, India made on the Coromandel Coast in 1775 and a table cover made by Margaret Oothout in 1764, and prints and drawings that includes Diogenes after Parmigiano by Ugo da Carpi made after 1525, an untitled work by Keith Haring from 1982 and Il Perdono (Visions of Saint Francis of Assisi) by Frederico Barocci in 1581.

Haines Mill MuseumHaines Mill Museum Allentown, Pennsylvania
The Haines Mill Museum sits beside Cedar Creek, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and was originally bought by John George Knauss in 1759 from his father-in-law, Joseph Bishop, who had acquired the land from William Penn's sons, Thomas and Richard in 1738. The original mill would be constructed in 1760, with the Knauss family running it until 1853, when Solomon Lichenwalner would take it over, and then sell it to Jacob Haines in 1906. A fire would destroy everything but the walls in 1909, and it would be rebuilt, until 1952, when the Haines family sold it, although it would only operate until 1956 and then close. The county commissioners would purchase it in 1972, and restore it as a working grist mill museum. Visitors are able to enjoy watching the water turbine and rolling equipment operated by water power that is supplied from a mill race in exactly the same way that it had been doing since the mid 18th century. The museum hosts concerts, festivals, outstanding educational programs for folks of all ages and permanent exhibits.

Liberty Bell Shrine of AllentownLiberty Bell Shrine of Allentown, Pennsylvania
The Liberty Bell Museum is also known as the Liberty Bell Shrine Museum and is situated in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in the former Zion's United Church of Christ that had also been known as the Zion's Reformed Church. The museum is located in the church where the Liberty Bell would be hidden during the American Revolutionary War, and today contains exhibits that pertain to the bell and subjects that include local history, liberty, patriotism and freedom. The shrine would be founded in 1962, by Dr. Morgan D. Person. After the defeat of the American army at the Battle of Brandywine on September 1, 1777, the revolutionary capital of Philadelphia would be left defenseless, and the city started getting ready for the inevitable British attack. One of the most important decisions that the city could do would be to take their bells out of the city, which the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania ordered, because the British might melt them down and make cannons from them; so eleven bells, in the state house bell and the bells from Christ Church and St. Peter's Church were taken from the city so the British couldn't get to them. A train of more than 700 wagons, guarded by 200 cavalry from Virginia and North Carolina under the command of Colonel Thomas Polk of the 4th Regiment North Carolina Continental Line, would leave the city for Bethlehem in the Lehigh Valley. The bells would be hidden in the hay and manure, and in the wagon of Northampton County militia private John Jacob Mickley would be the state house bell. The wagons would arrive in the Richland township on September 18, and on the 23rd, the bishop of the Moravian Church in Bethlehem said the wagons had arrived and all the bells but the state house bell had been moved to Northampton Towne, which is Allentown, today. The next day, a wagon that was driven by Frederick Leaser would take the bell to the historical Zion's Reformed Church in Allentown's center, where it would be stored, with the other bells that had arrived as well, under the floorboards of the church. The British would march, unopposed, into Philadelphia on September 26, but the bell would stay there until the British were beaten in June of 1778.
