Berlin wall
was built on August 13, 1961 as a symbol of the Cold War. It
separated West Berlin from East Berlin and anyone crossing was
subject to being shot. For 28 years the wall stopped anyone form
crossing. People could not get their jobs or even visit
families, however, over 5,000 people successfully escaped East
Berlin into West Berlin. The number of people who died trying to
cross is debatable however claims of more than 200 have been
made. On August 23, 1989 the communist removed the border
restrictions and the wall was opened by East Germany on November
9, 1989 when tens of thousands of East Berliners flooded the
checkpoints to cross over to West Germany. The wall was torn
down the next year as Communism collapsed and the Cold War
ended.

Brandenburg Gate
was once the city gate and a main symbol of Berlin. There are
six columns on each side making five entries that line up with
the roadways. On top of the gate is the Quadriga and faces to
the east. The design of the gate was inspired by designs from
Athens. The U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the
Brandenburg Gate in 1963 and the Soviets hung large banners
across the gate to block the views into the east. When the
Berlin Wall collapsed, it became a mark of freedom and unity.
West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl walked through the gate and
was greeted by East German Prime Minister Hans Modrow on
December 22, 1989, symbolizing the reopening of the gate. Today
it is closed to vehicle traffic. |
