• Taylor Mill
  Is a popular historic site in Derry Village.  The Taylor Sawmill is located on seventy-one acres in  Ballard State Forest in Derry.  This famous Saw Mill was named after Robert Taylor who purchased the property in 1799 and he began operating an up and down sawmill very similar to the current one from 1805.  The exact date from when the sawmill stopped running is uncertain.  The original saw mill was stripped and sold for scrap metal when Ernest R. Ballard purchased the land in 1939. Ernest Ballard searched extensively through New England for another up and down sawmill and eventually found one in Sandown, New Hampshire owned by Dan Hoit.  The mill had been disassembled fifty years earlier and was stored away under a barn Mr. Ballard purchased the saw mill for $180.00.  Mr. Ballard and his wife spent two years finding necessary parts & assembling the mill back to it's operating condition.  Mr. Ballard also purchased a water wheel from a company in Hanover, Pennsylvania for $3,000. the water wheel was six feet wide, twelve feet in diameter, weighing 1,000 pounds and had forty buckets.   This sawmill had the capacity of logs ten feet in length & twenty-eight inches in diameter, the mill operated at sixty strokes per minute.  Records indicate that other up and down sawmills were capable of sawing logs up to thirty-eight feet in length & the diameter was larger than the capacity of the Taylor Mill.  The entire property, sawmill, nearby house and seventy-one acres of land were donated to the state of New Hampshire in 1953 by Ernest Ballard.  Today the Taylor Sawmill runs on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month during the Spring & Summer months along with demonstrations from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00p.m. through the end of September.

  Was once the home to the famous poet Robert Frost and his family, who lived on this sixty-four acre farm near Derry Village between 1900 and 1911.  This simple two-story white farmhouse was typical of New England in the 1880's.  This peaceful farm provided inspiration for several of Robert Frost's pieces.  When you visit the Robert Frost Farm you will see many authentic, rare items such as personal items, antique furnishings and video tapes with original readings from Robert Frost.  The Robert Frost Farm is now a National Historic Landmark in Deer Village.   The Robert Frost Farmhouse and grounds are open year-round, guided house tours are available and visitors can see what life was like for this famous poet.  Additional items of interest are the Children's Garden and a peaceful walk along the Hyla Brook Trail.   Here you can pick up an educational brochure that will guide you as you explore this beautiful trail at your own pace.  The Robert Frost Farm has several special events and activities throughout the year, visitors of all ages will enjoy themselves when they visit the Robert Frost Farm.
