INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF AURORA, COLORADO?
Founded in 1891, the city of Aurora was originally named Fletcher by
its founder, former Chicago resident Donald Fletcher. Fletcher, who had made
a lot of money by developing Denver's Capitol Hill, had the idea of
developing the prairie land east of Denver and connecting it to the city by
a trolley line. He was successful in bringing his idea to fruition, and
constructed 14 houses along what is now Galena Street.
In 1907, the town changed its name to Aurora, and later adopted a city seal
designed by Albert Christen. The seal bears five stars representing home,
church, school, business and industry, and a rising sun indicating the
rising community sharing its light and making its voice heard throughout the
Rocky Mountains. The blue color in the seal represents our azure skies while
the gold is symbolic of that which originally brought settlers to Colorado.
Military presence in Aurora grew in 1942 when the Army Air Corps constructed
Buckley Field. This, in addition to Lowry Field, brought the military to
Aurora, which in turn brought employment, people and money to the city. By
1960, Aurora had 50,000 residents.
The 1970s were prosperous for Aurora with the city benefiting from new
highway construction. As with the rest of Colorado, the 1980s were a time of
economic cooling off, but the 1990s ushered in economic prosperity. However,
closures of the military bases, which began with the closure of Lowry Air
Force Base in Aurora, threatened the city’s well being. The closing of
Fitzsimons soon followed. Yet Aurora pulled together, and these facilities
now are being redeveloped with new housing and recreational amenities as
well as medical and technical businesses that have selected Aurora as the
place to be.
The city has come a long way since 1891. Today, Aurora is a booming,
progressive city with a population of more than 290,000 residents, making it
the third most populous city in Colorado.
