McCrae HouseMcCrae House Guelph, Ontario, Canada Roll of Honor of Clan MacRae's dead of WWI at Eilean Donan Castle
The McCrae House, in Guelph, Ontario, Canada was the birthplace of John McCrae, who would become a doctor, soldier and the author of the famous WWI poem, In Flanders Fields; and is now a National Historic Site of Canada. The small limestone cottage would be constructed in 1858, and then owned by the McCrae family from 1870 until 1873, with other families owning the house until 1966, when a group of citizens would buy it with the intention of keeping it as a museum; and eventually formed the Lt. Col. John McCrae Birthplace Society to start raising funds for the restoration. The government would designate McCrae as a person of national importance and the house a place of national importance, and contains a marvelous array of permanent and temporary exhibits that interpret the life and times of McCrae, with annual themes being offered here. Some of the summer activities include Canada Day, History Camp, Poppy Push, Teddy Bear Picnic and outstanding special teas to be held in the garden. Those great volunteers that work in the garden have worked so hard to make it an award winning garden that reflects the period of the mid-to-late 19th century. John was also a great poet and artist that would become quite famous as a doctor during the Second Battle of Ypres in WWI, but better known now and later as the author of the vibrant poem In Flanders Fields. He would be born in the house to Lt. Col. David McCrae and Janet Simpson Eckford and the grandson of Scottish immigrants. He has a magnificent history and life story that is well worth reading when you visit, and it showed how a man could overcome all kinds of obstacles to become what he wanted to be in life. His poem was such a moving literary model that it wouldn't be sent in by him but by a fellow officer after he had written it and discarded it. There are many stories about how it came to be printed, but the truth came out that a fellow officer had thought so much of it and him that he sent it into a magazine called Punch. Many of his poems would not be published until after his death, which was suddenly since he was only 45 when he passed. For those that aren't sure how to obtain his poem, it is written here; "In Flanders fields, the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below...We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields..Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands, we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields..."

Hammond Museum of RadioHammond Museum of Radio Guelph, Ontario, Canada
The Hammond Museum of Radio was started by a young 16 year boy named Fred Hammond, who began collecting early radio and wireless relics at the age of 16, with the first public display shown in a small structure that sat at the rear of his College Street home, where his ham radio sat, about 1960. In the early 1970s, the Hammond Manufacturing Company would construct a new plant in Guelph, Ontario, and Fred would make certain that an extra 4000 square foot space would be added to house his interesting and eccentric collections, called the Hammond Museum of Radio. In 1999, just a bit before Hammond passed on, the company's new expansion would become the present home of the museum, that now contains hundreds of receivers and transmitters that date from the early spark period to the present day of National's first solid state HR0500. During those decades, the museum has been able to grow into one of the premier wireless museums of North America, filled with the cutting edge electronic devices that allowed us to communicate better. The close ties between Fred's father's company, and the museum would continue to grow through the years, as did the significance and inventory of the museum, and his ability to grasp futuristic ideas about the communication devices and parts that the company began manufacturing would help the museum grow as well, so that now, they are both, tops in their fields, and continue to grow because of the continued importance of those devices and parts. The museum also houses one of the biggest operational collection of Collins radio equipment in the world, so that the Collins 30K that the museum has, one of the less than a hundred built, is one of the rarest and finest pieces of radio equipment in the world, and it is still working. The entire museum will thrill ham radio operators around the world, with outstanding examples of antiquities and accessories.

The ArboretumThe Arboretum Guelph, Ontario, Canada
The University of Guelph arboretum was modeled after the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, that had been founded in 1872, as a privately endowed department, that is the same with the Guelph arboretum, that had been founded in the early 1970s, with the original plantings starting in 1971, that are now specialized gardens, gene conservation programs and botanical collections of outstanding quality. These types of arboretums would become excellent examples of the kind of American gardening that wouldn't become known throughout the world until the late 19th century, and as industrialization began to grow, cities and towns would acquire the need for the creation of public parks, for the community, with the views of botanical gardens changing from horticultural uses rather than just being lovely public spaces. The Guelph arboretum is open year round, with over 70,000 visitors coming here every year, and is often used for teaching, special events and research, with a large number of university courses, adult workshops, walking tours and school programs held here during the year. It has grown into a very popular agenda for dedications, weddings, dinner theater and memorial services with a magnificent backdrop of beautiful plants and gardens. The arboretum is located in old growth forests and meadow ecosystems, with more than five miles of trails, like the Trillium and Ivey trails, as well as 38 species of mammals, 18 reptiles and amphibians, 188 species of birds, shrubs, trees and 39 species of butterflies. The arboretum houses 1700 species and subspecies of shrubs and trees, with the majority of trees and shrubs indigenous to southern Ontario, with an emphasis on woody plants at the center. It houses more than 40 collections that contain native plants and introduced species, that are used for landscape examples, research, public education, genetic diversity of rare plants and habitat restoration examples.

Riverside ParkRiverside Park Guelph, Ontario, Canada
Riverside Park is set on 80 acres in the northern area of Woolwich Street in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, constructed around part of Speed River that flows through the city. It originally opened in 1905, on 14.5 acres, somehow connected to the city's streetcar system, that has since been stopped, by had been one of the stops along the route, and has grown into the size it now contains, with numerous on-site features and famous landmark in the city, that hosts many events held here during the year, every year. One such favorite is the floral clock, that is completely mechanized and functional, that highlights more than 6,000 plants, with the only mechanized parts seen on the display, being the hands; 28 feet in diameter, with numeric floral patterns showcased on its face, with every number spanning four feet. Every year, the floral patterns are changed, celebrating famous events or people, with Arabic numbers being used in the winter, and Roman numerals used in the summer, that are also illuminated. At the beginning of 2011, the floral arrangement would be created to commemorate St. Joseph's health center, and it also has a floral calendar that is changed every day to reflect the day's date. It had originally been constructed in 1949, and then reconstructed in 1955, according to the designs of John Jock Clark, the city's long-time park manager. By the west entrance, they have placed a model of the first house ever constructed in the city, built by John Galt, in 1827, where he and his family would live. The house would be named the Priory, so named after Charles Prior, one of the people that had helped Galt in founding the city, and had been a squarely cut cabin made of laterally stacked logs with multiple purposes, like a post office, tavern and in 1887, a railroad depot. The Speed River runs along its side, complementing each other, and where they come together, forming a naturalized landscape that offers many organic benefits. The park offers fishing, dragon boat races, paddleboat rides and ice skating in season that has made this park one of the most popular in the city.
