Things to do in Kingston

Fort Henry Fort Henry Kingston, Ontario, Canada
Fort Henry, known as the Fort Henry National Historic Site, is situated in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, sitting on Point Henry, the most strategic place that is located near the mouth of the Cataqui River, where it goes into the St. Lawrence River, by the upper end of the Thousand Islands area. The original fort had been built during the War of 1812, when Ontario was just a British colony called Upper Canada. This fortification would be built on the highest ground of Point Henry so that it could protect the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard, where the Royal Military College of Canada sits today; so that it could protect the region from any attacks coming from the United States. The fort would also keep track of the maritime traffic on the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, since the loss of this important shipping route would stop the flow of supplies to Kingston and the remainder of Upper Canada. The Fort Henry that is seen today was constructed sometime between 1832 and 1837 to continue the protection of the Lake Ontario end of the Rideau Canal, that had been built as an alternate route between Kingston and Montreal that would thus bypass the St. Lawrence River, that separated Canada from the US. The government had wanted to build more forts along the area, but because the canal had been so expensive that they just built four Montello towers and kept the fort. During that period, the fort would be the strongest protection in the nation west of Quebec City. The British army would leave in 1870, just after the Canadian confederation, so that Canadian troops would then garrison the fort until 1891. This fort would see the creation of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, that would be one of the first units in the Canadian Army, putting B battery in charge of the fort. In WWI, the fort would become a facility for holding Ukrainian detainees. After the military abandoned the fort, it would fall into disrepair, until the 1930s, when the fort would be rejuvenated under the leadership of Ronald L. Way, that would be accomplished as part of the work program that begin during the Great Depression, much like the CCC and WPA in the US. The old fort would become a living museum, that opened in 1938, and in the second World War, it would be used as a prisoner-of-war camp for German Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine prisoners.

Agnes Etherington Art CenterAgnes Etherington Art Center Kingston, Ontario, Canada
This fabulous art museum is located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and is run by the Queen's University, hosting some 12 to 15 exhibitions each year, along with public lectures, symposia, school and family programs, artists' talk and performances. The center is the results of the Kingston Art and Music Club that had been started in 1926, and is here because of the outstanding assistance from Agnes McCausland Richardson Etherington, whose grandfather had founded the grain dealer James Richardson & Sons in 1857, which helped the family become quite rich. Agnes' brother, George Richardson, died in WWI, in 1916, and left her with a legacy that she could use as she saw fit, which included increasing the arts at Queen's University. Agnes used much of the funds to start the George Taylor Richardson Memorial Fund that continues to be a significant source of funding for the university's arts program. Agnes put in her will, that her house, a magnificent neo-Georgian mansion, should be used as a university and community art gallery, so the gallery would open in 1957, extending its size in 1962, 1975, 1978 and 2000, so that it is quite large now. It houses an impressive collection of 14,000 works that span from the 14th century to the current day, that is the third biggest provincial gallery in Ontario, and includes sculptures, paintings and graphics by some of the finest Canadian artists ever, as well as costumes, Inuit art, European old master paintings, silver and other decorative works, quilts and one of the biggest public collections of African artworks in the country. In 2006, a unique portrait of Isabella Clark Macdonald that had been painted sometime around 1830 was acquired, and just recently, US based philanthropists Isabel and Alfred Bader made their second donation of a painting by 17th century Dutch artist, Rembrandt van Rijin, called the Head of a Man in a Turban, to the center. Some of the finest artists included in the collection are; Horatio Walker, Rebecca Belmore, Ian Carr-Harris, A. A. Bronson, Sarindar Dhaliwal, Norman White, General Idea and more.

It can only be reached by ferry or boat, from either the US or Canada, with the Canadian ferry, the Wolfe Islander III, run by the government free of charge, while the Horne's Ferry from the US side is still run by the original holder's family, licensed in 1802. The island has many beautiful sights, whatever the season, with snowy owls coming here in the winter, as well as swans in the spring and fall, that come here to nest. It is home to an increasing flock of wild turkeys, deer and other animals, while being designated as an important bird area. Marysville has a bakery, shops, service shops and excellent restaurants, and the biggest church in the Thousand Islands. There is a new medical center that just opened in 2010, a volunteer fire and ambulance service, with the limestone town hall being added to the list of National Historic Sites of Canada. But one of the most significant features of the island is the Wolfe Island Wind Project that had been developed by the Canadian Hydro Developers, with 86 wind turbines, that is now the second biggest in the country.

Royal Military College MuseumRoyal Military College Museum Kingston, Ontario, Canada
This museum, started in 1962, is situated in the Martello Tower of Fort Frederick, on the campus of the Royal Military College of Canada, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The museum is located at Fort Frederick, which is a 1790 fortress made for the most part of earthen works, with a north wall of stone masonry, and listed on the Registry of Historic Places of Canada, named in honor of Frederick, prince of Wales. The museum was created to collect, preserve, research and showcase the artifacts and records that pertain to the history of RMCC, the achievements of its graduates, and the earlier naval history of the fort and the Kingston Royal Naval dockyard that had once been located here. The museum displays items that pertain to the history of the Royal college, the life of the cadets and the site it sits upon. It also contains a small collection of material that pertains to the Point Frederick dockyards and the Royal Navy. From 1922 until 1946, the collections were mostly filled with weapons and military relics, but later expanded, and now include many collections of military memorabilia, along with 7000 relics that include the Douglas arms collection, military art and trophies, uniforms, flags, and a marvelous collection of 16th to the 20th century weapons. The Douglas arms collection has more than 400 guns that had been originally owned by the Mexican president, General Porfino Diaz. The Leinster Plate collection of the Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment is another outstanding collection that is well enjoyed by visitors. In 2008, a model of the 112 HMS St. Lawrence from 1814 would also be donated. The bottom floor of the Martello tower showcases the War of 1812 and the fort's dockyard, with the main floor showcasing the history of the college, and personal mementos of the Old Eighteen, that first class that enrolled in 1876.

Marine Museum of the Great Lakes Marine Museum of the Great Lakes Kingston, Ontario, Canada
The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston, Ontario, Canada is a National Historic site and is home to many great historic structures, including the Kingston dry docks, the museum ship Alexander Henry, the Gordon C. Shaw Research center and the Audrey Rushbrook Memorial Library. The museum's collections include; more than 3,000 relics, more than 15,000 photographs, 40,000 ship plans, nautical charts, drawings, 11,000 bibliographic titles, paintings and 3,000 boxes of archival materials. The museum believes that one of the most rewarding and exciting parts of maritime history is the adventure of researching, which is quite understandable, if you can consider the numerous movies that have hit the screen and brought significant attention to the field of archaeology and history, with the Indiana Jones series, National Treasures and Angels and Demons, that bring to light the difficulties of finding the right links that lead to discoveries of fabulous treasures, although not quite like the movies, which are after all, just movies. But in real life, imagine yourself being the hunter of antiquities, digging through excavations or decoding various records of the past that lead you in the right direction, until you discover the prize. The collections include many various objects that span broad area of maritime use, like the instruments, tools and equipment that had been used by mariners in their daily lives, as well as yachtsmen and shipbuilders, that include boat building tools, steam engines, rigging gear, navigational instruments, shipbuilding tools, deck gear, small craft, ship models, clothing and decorative arts. The 3000 ton, 210 foot Alexander Henry, is typical of the type of ship constructed from the end of WWII to the 1970s, and is a great tool for the engineers of today.
