Things to do in Ontario

Niagara Falls Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada is located in the Golden Horseshoe area of southern Ontario, Canada; dominated by two world famous waterfalls that lay on the Niagara River, and best viewed when you visit the Canadian side of the river, although, the American side is just as fabulous to many that visit this monumental attraction that has been famous for many centuries. It welcomes millions of travelers each year, and considered to be one of the main attractions of the world today. Because it is such a tourist area, the city has allowed businesses to be constructed along the falls and gorge, with many natural attractions on both sides of the river, enormous parking lots, observation towers, advertisements, neon billboards, high-rise hotels, souvenir shops, theaters and casinos; all vying for the tourist dollar. On the northern and southern edges of the famous falls, there are many excellent golf courses and a plethora of historic sites that include those from the War of 1812 and many earlier historical sites from the beginning of both nations that straddle the falls and river. Since the falls and river produce a plentiful and inexpensive supply of hydroelectric power, there are many electro-metallurgical and electro-chemical businesses that have come here since the early to mid20th century, but began leaving in the 1970s and 1980s. When the Ontario government allowed legal wagering in the mid 1990s, the area began to see a boom arrive, that has continued to grow as the area began filling with casinos, while the older sections began to see a significant revitalization. With many ways to come here, via airplanes and trains, as many huge highways pass through the cities, as are possible and offer many ways to visit here, whether your preferences are driving, or letting someone else drive or the kind of money you want to spend getting there; it offers many suggestions about traveling and where to stay with many online internet sites all trying to encourage you to visit their little piece of heaven near the falls, which are the main reason many visitors come here. To be able to stand in front of those huge thundering falls, with spray drifting through the air, and the sun filtering through the water fog, it is a majestic magnificent sight, one that will hold your attention for hours, with so many places to see and things to do, you and your family will never run out of those, but instead might run out of time and money; but there's always next year, except that during the summer, the region becomes more visited and filled with people than many of the other intriguing sights you might decide to check out.

Royal Ontario Museum Royal Ontario Museum Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The Royal Ontario Museum of world culture and natural history is situated in Toronto, Ontario, Canada that was founded in 1912 in the downtown area, affiliated with the University of Toronto until 1968, when it would gain its independence. It houses over forty galleries that contain over six million relics of East Asian art, European and Canadian history, dinosaurs and Near Eastern and African art, as well as the world's biggest collection of fossils from the Burgess Shale that includes over 150,000 specimens. Opened in 2007, the Crystal contains the new main entrance, seven more galleries, a cafe, gift shop, restaurant and the biggest temporary exhibition hall in the nation. There had been only five main galleries at the ROM, one for zoology, archaeology, mineralogy, paleontology and geology, until the 1960s, when they opened the dinosaur gallery, and other galleries named after their benefactor instead of the broad scientific gallery. The natural history galleries are all located on the second floor, with samples and collections of various animals from throughout the world, along with the gallery of birds, the Schad Gallery, the Bat Cave, the Keenan Family Gallery of Hands-On Biodiversity, the James and Louise Temerty Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs and Gallery of the Age of Mammals. World Culture Galleries like the A. G. Leventis Foundation Gallery of Ancient Cyprus, the Chinese galleries, Bishop White Gallery of Chinese Temple Art, the Gallery of Africa: Egypt, the Gallery of the Bronze Age Aegean, the Gallery of Korea, the Prince Takamado Gallery of Japan, the CIBC gallery, Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian gallery and the new Wirth Gallery of the Middle East. There are many more as you can see, but the best and most exciting way to learn more about these fascinating artifacts and exhibits is to visit the museum and spend some time exploring all the magnificent relics and installations that will bring you closer to the city and its diverse peoples.

Casa Loma TorontoCasa Loma Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Casa Loma means Hill House in Spanish, but is a gothic revival style house located in midtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that has grown into a landmark museum; although it was originally built for Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, over a three year period from 1911 to 1914, with E. J. Lennox as the architect. It has a wonderful history, which is quite interesting for those that want to visit, but it can be learned better and more completely at the museum, that sits on five acres with gardens. The estate has a unique underground tunnel that runs from the house to the hunting lodge and the stables that include the tack rooms, garage, carriage room, stalls and potting shed. The main floor houses the Oak Room, Great Hall, Billiard's Room, Library, Smoking Room, Dining Room, Sir Henry's Study, Conservatory, Peacock Alley and Serving Room; with the second floor containing the Round Room, Sir Henry's Suite, Windsor Room, Sir Henry's bathroom, Guest Suite, Lady Pellatt's Suite and bathroom, and Girl Guides Exhibit. The third floor houses the Austin Room, the stairs to the Towers, Servant's Room, Kiwanis Room, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada Regimental Museum, while the basement contains the gift shop, tunnel, Castle Cafe, wine cellar, swimming pool that would never be finished and the gym, that is now the cafe, would not be constructed either. It is filled with outstanding relics and antique furniture that showcase the period they represent.  The French oak panels that line Sir Henry's drawing room would take the carpenters three years to carve, so you can see the type of history, workmanship and artistic value of the house and its furnishings.

Fort Henry KingstonFort Henry Kingston, Ontario, Canada
The Fort Henry National Historic Site in Kingston, Ontario, Canada sits on Point Henry, which is and was a strategic point near the mouth of the Cataraqui River as it enters the St. Lawrence River, by the head of the Thousand Islands. The original fort would be built during the War of 1812, when the area called Ontario now, was a British colony called Upper Canada, and constructed on the high grounds of the point so that it could protect the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard from any attacks that might come from the United States. The fort would also begin monitoring the maritime traffic that traveled on the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, since any type of disruption to the significant waterway would affect the supply route between Kingston and the Upper Canadian region. The current fort would be constructed from 1832 to 1837 to protect the Lake Ontario edge of the Rideau Canal. Just after 1870, the British forces would be withdrawn, after the Canadian Confederation was formed, with Canadian troops occupying the fort until 1891. Today, uniformed military interpreters staff the old fort, taking visitors on a tour of the many demonstrations of British military life, as well as self-guided tours and other activities that include historical reenactments of drills and battle tactics, the Muster parade where visitors are dressed in period uniforms and taught to march in formation by a member of the guard, the Victorian school room and the garrison parade. It has been made a National Historic Site of Canada and also been included in the designation of Rideau Canal as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
